The Department of Transportation ( DOTr) announced Monday that the construction of the Mindanao Railway Project (MRP) will begin second quarter of 2018.

“Second quarter of 2018,” Transportation Undersecretary for Rails Cesar B. Chavez said when asked about the timeline of the project.

The Mindanao railway will run for a total of 1,532-km connecting the major cities in Mindanao such as Davao provinces, Iligan, Cagayan de Oro, General Santos and Zamboanga.

Estimated to cost P35.26 billion, proposal for the first phase was approved by the National Economic and Development Authority Board last month.

Phase 1 of the Mindanao Railway Project will cover Tagum City in Davao del Norte, passing through Davao City, and to Digos City in Davao del Sur.

Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (DCCCII) President Ronald Go said the railway project will allow the faster movement of people and goods across Mindanao.

The MRP is one of the major projects under the socioeconomic agenda of President Rodrigo Duterte “Build build build” when he promised acceleration of infrastructures in the Philippines.
