The military has found the skeletal remains of people who were said to be victims of the terrorist Maute Group.
GMA News Online cited Lieutenant General Carlito Galvez Jr, saying that the skeletons were found in areas believed to be “execution sites” of the IS-linked terrorists.
Galvez described the killings as a “brutal execution” that is “proof of their un-Islamic ways.”
It has been more than a month since the Maute Group ensued a clash with the government forces.
In that span of time, the military has recorded over 500 deaths due to the crisis. Majority of this deaths – 379 – were terrorists; 89 were slain forces of the government.
It was initially reported that 39 civilians were killed due to the conflict. But this number rose to 45 due to this recent discovery of the troops.
The military believes there could be more people who were mercilessly murdered by the Maute terrorists, as per a GMA News Online story.
The whole Mindanao remains to be under martial rule after President Rodrigo Duterte’s declaration just hours after the fighting erupted.
The allowable period for the martial law will end on July 22 but the police and the military said they are keen on recommending for its extension.
Malacañang is now waiting for the full report on the recommendation before deciding on the extension.
