- Senator happy PDEA chief to head BOC
- He said Lapeña a man of integrity, won’t easily be influenced by corruption in the BOC
- He also said he hopes can finally be the one to clean up Customs
MANILA, Philippines – Sen. Panfilo “Ping” Lacson expressed his approval over President Rodrigo Duterte’s choice to have Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) chief Isidro Lapeña replace embattled Customs Commissioner Nicanor Faeldon at the helm of the Bureau of Customs.
“Well, ako, sabihin ko na lang na happy ako sa set-up. Kasi kilala kong personal si Director General Lapeña ng PDEA. Maski nung nasa PNP pa,” he told ABS-CBN.
[Well, for me, I only say I’m happy with the set-up. Because I personally Director General Lapeña of the PDEA. Even way back when he was with the PNP.]
Saying Lapeña is not one to be easily swayed by corruption, Lacson said he hopes he will finally be the one to reform the system of the BOC.
“At sana man lang, pagpasok niya sa Customs, hindi siya kainin ng sistema, kundi labanan niya ang sistema,” he said.
[And I also hope, that when he enters Customs, he won’t be eaten by the system, but instead fight back against it.]
“Kasi systemic nga eh. Hindi lang naman ito kahapon o nung isang buwan eh. Ito, mula’t sapul pa, ito na talaga ang kalakaran doon,” Lacson added.
[Because it’s systemic. The corruption didn’t happen yesterday or in the past month. This problem, from the beginning, has been the way things are.]
The BOC has long been seen as one of the country’s most corrupt government agencies.
The bureau is currently undergoing scrutiny from Congress after the entry of P6.4-billion worth of drugs through its express lane.
