MANILA, Philippines – The lawyer of Patricia Bautista has explained the P3-million debt in her credit card; saying it was a loan she took out to pay for her children’s schooling.
“‘Had to pay for, among other things, my kids’ schooling, until they reached prep, pre-school, nursery, kinder’, siya ang gumastos [she was the one who spent],” Atty. Lorna Kapunan, quoting Bautista’s statement, told GMA News.
Comelec Chairman Andres Bautista had earlier claimed his wife racked up the debt because of her extravagant spending.
However, Kapunan said her client’s debt was the result of the loan spread over 12 years.
“‘My three-million credit card debt accumulated over twelve years. I never got a personal budget’,” she said, quoting Bautista. “’I took out a loan from him with interest with the P3.3 million.’”
Kapunan then said she was still in fact in the process of paying off her debt to her husband.
“Binabayaran niya, with interest pa, sa asawa niya [She is still paying with interest to her husband]. ‘I have paper proof to show how many months I paid’,” the lawyer said.
Kapunan added Bautista —unlike her husband— was not financially independent and had to work in the salon chain owned by her mother Baby Cruz as an ordinary employee.
“No, in fact, worse thing is, her only job was with her mother sa [in] Franck Provost where she was paid a salary like an employee, and then cinut pa ng nanay niya iyon [she was cut off by her mother],” she said.
