PNP Sulu arrests 6 suspects caught slaughtering sea turtles

The Philippine National Police (PNP) Sulu Maritime Group was able to arrest six individuals who were caught slaughtering sea turtles.

The PNP Sulu Group received a report that a group of individuals were seen catching and killing sea turtles in  Barangay Timudas, Pata town in Sulu province. Six individuals were caught red handed in the act of slaughtering the sea turtles and were even in possession of 23 different kinds of live sea turtles and meat and shells of turtles. There were even shells and turtle meats scattered in the site, as per a story by GMA.

The suspects will be faced with charges in violation of RA 9147 or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Sulu confiscated all the remaining live sea turtles.

The Philippine-Sabah Turtle Islands group is located in the Sulu Sea and is one of the world’s few remaining major nesting grounds for green turtles (Chelonia mydas), as per an article in the One Ocean Ambassadors Organization.
