- Senator said he admires fellow lawmaker for deftly disproving president’s allegations
- He pointed out that burden of proof has now shifted to Duterte
- He also said president’s stunt has lowered his credibility while raising Trillanes’ own
MANILA, Philippines – Despite clashing at times on the Senate floor, Sen. Panfilo “Ping” Lacson said he nevertheless admired fellow Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV for deftly disproving President Rodrigo Duterte’s claim he kept a bank account in Singapore.
“I take my hat off kay Sen. Trillanes. Very boldly talagang pinakita niya na kaya niyang i-disprove and ‘di siya nag-hesitate. Ako, I admire him for that,” GMA News quoted him as saying.
[I take my hat off to Sen. Trillanes. He very boldly really showed that he can disprove and he didn’t hesitate. Me, I admire him for that.]
According to Lacson, the burden of proof has now shifted to Duterte following the disproval.
“Ang burden of proof, lalong bumigat pa sa part ni Presidente. Dapat makita ngayon may existing account na may laman,” he said.
[The burden of proof, it has gotten harder on the part of the President. There should be shown now that there is an existing account with an amount.]
The senator added that the stunt also raised Trillanes’ credibility while lowering Duterte’s especially after the latter admitted he made the account numbers up supposedly to entrap his critic.
“I would say the credibility of Senator Trillanes was buoyed up,” he said. “The President had no choice but to admit he lied because Senator Trillanes was able to prove that the account was nonexistent.”
“Malaking bagay. Kasi pag nagiba mo isa or dalawa, it follows na ang susunod may cloud of doubt. Paano mo ma-appreciate ang credibility ng susunod pang similar accusations?” he added.
[It’s a big thing. Because when you’ve disproven him once or twice, it follows that the next claim will have a cloud of doubt. How can you appreciate the credibility of the next accusations?]
