MANILA, Philippines – Detention or starvation.
President Rodrigo Duterte laid down these two choices to PUJ drivers and operators who continue plying the roads without complying with the government’s modernization program by the start of 2018.
“Kaya, I’ll give you until the end of the month or until the end of the year. Sumunod kayo because January 1, ‘pag may makita ako diyan mga jeep ninyo, ‘di narehistro, luma, guguyurin ko ‘yan sa harap ninyo. If you want, gusto ninyo ng gulo, marami man akong pulis,” the Philippine Daily Inquirer quoted him as saying.
[So, I’ll give you until the end of the month or until the end of the year. You should comply because by January 1, if I see your jeeps that are unregistered and outdated, I will drag them in front of you. If you want trouble, I have many police.]
“Aarestuhin ko talaga kayo. Believe me. Maniwala kayo. Mag—mag-abang-abang kayo diyan sa daan ninyo, padaanin n’yo, ‘yan lang ang hinintay kong magkamali kayo. ‘Yan ang pagkakamali na gusto ko,” he added.
[I will arrest you. Believe me. Go ahead and continued driving on the roads, pass through them, those are the infractions I’m waiting for you to commit. Those are the violations I’m looking for.]
Duterte also told noncompliant drivers he won’t care if they face starvation; saying modernization is needed to benefit the riding public.
“’Pag ‘di kayo na-modernize, umalis kayo. Mahirap kayo, sige. Magtiis kayo sa hirap at gutom. Wala ako pakialam,” he said. “ It’s the majority of the Filipino people. Huwag ninyong ipasubo ang tao,” he said.
[If you don’t modernize, then leave. You’re poor, so be it. Go and endure poverty and hunger. I don’t care. It’s the majority of the Filipino people. Don’t jeopardize the people.]
