- Actor revealed being a victim of sexual harassment too
- He revealed being groped, engaged in racy conversations by older male execs many times
- He said he empathized with the victims especially on the difficulty of coming out
Another male actor has come out to reveal he too was a victim of sexual harassment amid the fallout of Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein.
In a series of tweets, ‘Dawson’s Creek’ star James Van Der Beek said he too had been victimized by older and powerful executives back when he was still just starting his career.
“I’ve had my ass grabbed by older, powerful men, I’ve had them corner me in inappropriate sexual conversations when I was much younger,” he said.
Van Deer Beek said he understood why the victims —especially women— would prefer to keep silent rather than expose their attackers.
“For anyone judging the women who stayed silent, read this for perspective. Also for anyone brushing off harassment as “boys being boys,” he said. “I understand the unwarranted shame, powerlessness & inability to blow the whistle. There’s a power dynamic that feels impossible to overcome.”
As for Weinstein’s case, the actor applauded everyone who spoke out and stressed that what he did was unacceptable in any case.
“What Weinstein is being accused of is criminal. What he’s admitted to is unacceptable – in any industry. I applaud everybody speaking out,” he said.
Earlier, former football player and actor Terry Crews came out with his own story of sexual harassment; saying he was victimized by a high-ranking Hollywood mogul last year during a public function in front of his wife.
Crews said he too didn’t push the issue for fear of putting his career in jeopardy.
