FDA warns public against buying fake Safeguard soap that may contain chemicals hazardous to health

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned the public against buying and using counterfeit Safeguard Family Germ Protection Pure White 60g that may possibly contain chemicals that are hazardous to health.

As per Newsline, the FDA said in a public advisory No. 2017-291 that the counterfeit Safeguard soaps that may contain lead and mercury have proliferated in the market.

Procter & Gamble Philippines, Inc. and the Market Authorization Holder confirmed that Safeguard Family Germ Protection Pure White 60g with batch/lot number 50282043841 170618 are counterfeit. These soaps did not undergo safety assessment and quality assurance tests, therefore cannot be guaranteed to be safe or effective.

“The dangers/hazards of using counterfeit cosmetic products may come from ingredients that are not allowed to be part of a cosmetic product or from the contamination of heavy metals susch as lead and mercury which may result to adverse reactions including but not limited to skin sensitization, skin irritation, anaphylactic shock and organ failure,” the FDA said in the advisory.

The FDA urged the public to check the batch/lot number of the Safeguard Family Germ Protection Pure White 60g they bought and only buy from trusted supermarkets to ensure purchase of original products.
