MANILA, Philippines – Senator Grace Poe has thanked President Rodrigo Duterte for saying he wants her to be president someday, although the latter insisted foundlings should not be allowed to run, contrary to the Supreme Court decision.
Poe said Duterte’s statement is beneficial to her, personally and politically, but the chief executive should finish his term as the duly-elected President and as mandated by the Constitution.
“Pero ang ating Pangulo ang pinili ng ating mga kababayan at dapat tapusin nya ang kanyang termino,” said Poe in interview with reporters.
[But he was the one elected by the people and he should finish his term.]
In a speech at the celebration of Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) president Alfredo Lim’s birthday in Cavite, Duterte said he wants Poe to follow in his footsteps but disagrees with the decision of the High Tribunal saying foundlings are natural-born citizen and therefore, allowed to run for government positions.
“But I like Grace Poe to be President someday if the requirement remains to be same. But, I said, I think we will amend the Constitution and make that exemption, na ‘yung [that] foundling are already qualified,” said Duterte.
Reacting to Duterte’s opinion on ‘foundlings’, Poe said the Supreme Court has already ruled in her favor and she is glad the President respected it despite his disagreement.
The lady-senator also stressed she doesn’t want any change in the Constitution if the only purpose is to accommodate few people like her.
