Sitting for prolonged periods has a negative effect on health, experts say.

The BPO Industry Employees Network (BIEN) group explained that many call center agents are experiencing many health problems despite good wages.

According to BI’s spokesperson Mylene Cabalona, the urinary tract infection is a common disease among those in the business process outsourcing industry. There are also those who suffer from kidney stones.

According to Dr. Susan Mercado, many other illnesses can be found in excessive sitting.

Excessive sitting can be compared to smoking in terms of its effect to our health, she disclosed.

She explained that sitting up to eight hours or more is not good in blood flow and may accumulate fat that can affect the heart and can cause death.

Some illnesses that can be acquired are cardiovascular diseases that can cause heart attack or stroke, cancer, and diabetes.

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has issued an order that workers who are in the office, transport sector and those in the BPO industry, such as call center agents, should be given a 5-minute break every 2 hours.
