Japan’s foreign minister appoints Pikachu, Hello Kitty as City of Osaka’s ambassadors

Japan has appointed popular cartoon characters Pikachu and Hello Kitty as the City of Osaka’s ambassadors; in a bid to bring the 2025 World Expo to the country.

On Twitter,  Japan Foreign Minister Taro Kono shared photos of him while appointing the two new ambassadors.

“I have appointed Pikachu and Hello Kitty as Ambassador to promote the City of Osaka for the 2025 Expo host city,” he wrote.

A lot of Twitter users were delighted with the announcement.

“Well, you know what they say: If you want a thing done well, have a couple of your nation’s most beloved fictional characters do it for you. A truly ingenious tactic if ever I’ve seen one. Kono Taro knows what’s up!” commented Twitter user @KUWTVinsmokes.

“This is why I love Japan! Gotta plan a trip to Osaka for 2025 now!” said @ChrisM_SoL.

“My godson will be so excited,” wrote @MinbyH.

As of posting, the tweet already has over 13,000 retweets and more than 29,000 favorites.

The country is hoping that the port city of Osaka will be chosen as the host for the 2025 World Exposition.

The characters will be used for pamphlets and gifts to promote the city’s bid as it competes against Saclay in the suburbs of Paris, the central Russian city of Yekaterinburg, and the Azerbaijan capital Baku.
