Malacañang assured that no public funds were used in building the Mega Drug Abuse Treament and Reahabilitation Center in Fort Magsaysay in Nueva Ecija.
According to Manila Bulletin, newly appointed Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque said a Chinese philanthropist financed the construction of the 10,000-bed drug rehabilitation facility and no public funds were used.
Roque’s statement came a day after Dangerous Drug Board Chairman Dionisio Santiago opined that the creation of the large drug abuse treatment center was a mistake and impractical, saying it could have been more practical if the money spent to build the large facility was used to establish community-based rehabilitation centers.
“So, bagamat ganyan po ang opinion ng pinuno ng Dangerous Drugs Board, eh ang assurance naman po natin, walang nasayang na pondo ng gobyerno [Although that was the opinion of the Dangerous Drugs Board chief, our assurance is that no government funds were wasted]. That was a decision made by the donor and we can’t do anything about it,” Roque said.
Chinese real estate tycoon Huang Rulun donated P1.4 billion for the construction of the huge drug rehabilitation center.
