- House health panel’s report claimed 997 children experienced sickness after dengue vaccination
- Panel chair said adverse affects could be result of Dengvaxia
- Report also contended that 4 children died after being vaccinated
MANILA, Philippines – A draft report of the House Committee on Health claimed that 997 children fell ill after being vaccinated with Dengvaxia.
Citing the Department of Health (DOH)’s own study, the committee said the incidents occurred between March 19 and August 20—with 30 of the children needing hospitalization after experiencing serious adverse effects.
According to committee head Rep. Angelina Tan, Dengvaxia could be directly responsible for the children’s ailments.
“It means that the 997 children got sick after being inoculated with their first dose of Dengvaxia,” the Philippine Star quoted her as saying. “Their sickness ranged from as simple as fever, nausea, vomiting and body pain, to serious illness that required hospital confinement. The DOH did not have other details, highlighting its lack of proper monitoring and reporting protocols before undertaking the program.”
While the DOH has not given an update on the fate of the children, the committee also claimed that at least four children died from complications following the inoculation.
The fatalities included two from Bataan who were identified as 10-year-olds Christine de Guzman and Paul Ramirez, and two from Bulacan whose names were not disclosed.
Details of De Guzman and Ramirez’s cases were included in the report.
“On Oct. 11, 2016, De Guzman complained of headache and fever and would be absent from class. The following day, her fever continued. She was admitted in hospital and was diagnosed with dengue,” it said. “On Oct. 14, she experienced difficulty in breathing and stomach ache. It was later found out that she suffered internal bleeding and blood was already coming out of her mouth. In the morning of Oct. 15, she passed away.”
As for Ramirez, he passed away on April 10, 2016 after being vaccinated on March 31. Although his cause of death was officially due to congenital heart disease, it was noted that his ailment had not been proven medically before he was confined.
