- Organizers of the nationwide transport strikes cancelled their planned two-day protest action
- The cancellation came after Sen. Grace Poe appealed to them to call off the planned strikes
- Poe invited the transport groups to sit with the Senate committee on public services to discuss their concerns on the jeepney modernization program
A day after Senator Grace Poe appealed to Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operator Nationwide (PISTON) and Stop Jeepney Phaseout Coalition to call off their planned two-day nationwide transport strike, the transport groups cancelled the protest action.
The organizers cancelled their two-day nationwide transport strikes during a press briefing in Quezon City on Sunday, December 3, as per GMA News.
Earlier, George San Mateo, national president of PISTON, said they are studying the senator’s appeal although the preparations for the transport strikes were well underway. The lady senator said she will convene the Senate committee on public services which she chairs on December 7 to conduct a hearing regarding the jeepney modernization program of the government.
Sen. Poe invited the transport groups to sit with the senate committee to discuss their concerns about the program.
“I understand that certain issues in the modernization program still need to be carefully studied and threshed out with the concerned government agencies. We hope this can be done during the committee hearing. We also want to hear the alternative proposals from different stakeholders,” Poe said in a statement.
