“Agaton”, first tropical storm of the year, crosses Visayas, Mindanao areas

A low pressure area (LPA) in Mindanao intensified and turned into typhoon. It traversed areas between the Visayas and Mindanao on Tuesday.

“Agaton”, the first typhoon of this year, made landfall over Socorro town, Siargao at 1 a.m with maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour and 90 kph gusts moving west at 25 kph; maintaining its speed, moving west at 25 kph.

“Moderate to heavy rains is expected over Bicol Region, Visayas and Mindanao particularly in the regions of Eastern Visayas, Caraga and Davao. Residents of these areas must undertake precautionary measures against possible flooding and landslides and coordinate with their respective local disaster risk reduction and management,”  PAGASA   posted as disclosed in an article by  Philstar.

The storm is expected to cross Cebu and the Negros provinces within the day.

Tropical storm signal is raised to signal no. 1 in the following areas:

  • Palawan including Cuyo Island
  • Bohol
  • Cebu
  • Siquijor
  • Guimaras
  • Negros Oriental
  • Negros Occidental
  • Southern Antique
  • Southern Iloilo
