- DOLE is supporting a labor group’s proposal to give a monthly P500 cash voucher subsidy to all minimum wage earners
- The proposal is to help our fellow Filipinos cope up with the possible increase in the prices of basic commodities due to the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) law
Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello II said on Wednesday that he supports the proposal of Associated Labor Unions-Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (ALU-TUCP) for a financial subsidy of P500 provided monthly to all minimum wage earners in the form of cash voucher to avail beneficiaries of food and other grocery items.
The Labor secretary added that he is “seriously considering” the P500-proposal under the Labor Empowerment and Assistance Program (LEAP).
A TUCP representative said minimum wage earners will be the ones to suffer the most because of the increase in prices of basic commodities.
The TUCP said the TRAIN law may further weaken their financial capacity to provide for their families’ most basic of needs.
According to Bello, the funds for the monthly subsidy will come from the conditional cash transfer funds.
However, the Labor secretary clarified that the Department of Budget and Management’s (DBM) approval is still needed. The DBM has yet to comment about the proposal.
