The ‘Salimpokaw Ko Masa‘ dance troupe of Marawi City whose members have lost their homes, possessions, and many others, proved that their confidence and ability to perform remained intact despite everything they’ve gone through.
It was evident in their performance when they showcased their traditional Maranao dance singkil as their audition piece on “Pilipinas Got Talent’s” Saturday episode.
Their dance number was accompanied by percussion instruments and bamboo poles.
All four judges were impressed especially Vice Ganda who pointed out that although many can do different kinds of dance steps like cramping, none of them can dance ‘singkil’. “Maraming barangay sa Pilipinas na ni-isa ay walang marunong mag-singkil.” [There are many barangays in the Philippines having no one who knows how to do the singkil.]
If they win, the group said they’ll use the prize money to rebuild their houses in Marawi.
“Pinaghirapan namin iyon. Naglaho parang bula,” one of their members said. [We worked hard for our homes. Those disappeared just like that.]
The ‘Salimpokaw Ko Masa’ dance troupe got all the four nods they need to move on to the next round.
Let’s watch their performance here:
