- Pacquiao hopes his colleagues will support his bill that pushes for death penalty for drug lords
- Although a Born-Again Christian, he believes that death penalty does not violate the Bible’s commandments
- He had filed three bills to allow death penalty for crimes of drug trafficking, kidnapping, and aggravated rape
Senator Manny Pacquiao is pushing for a death penalty bill that targets only drug lords. He hopes that his colleagues would see the significance of the bill. Pacquiao was quoted by ABS-CBN saying: “Mahihirapan talaga kami to get the majority but we’re going to explain again to my colleagues that pipiliin lang natin: kumbaga ang gusto namin dito is ‘yung drug lords.”
[We’ll have difficulty convincing the majority but we’re going to explain to my colleagues that we will only choose. We only want the drug lords.]
He added, “Wala naman sigurong drug lords na mahirap. Hindi ‘yung mga users, ‘yung mga drug lords talaga ang gusto namin.”
[I don’t think there are poor drug lords. We’re not after the users but only the drug lords.]
The senator from Sarangani pointed out the effect of drugs to the youth. “Hindi naman siguro masama na puro lang sa drug lord kasi ‘yun ang gumagawa. Nasisira ang kabataan natin because of these people,” he said.
[I don’t think it’s bad that it will only be drug lords because they are the ones who are doing it. The youth are destroyed by these people.]
Pacquiao, chair of the Senate subcommittee on justice and human rights, admitted that they need to work out on a clear definition of a “drug lord.”
The devout Born-Again Christian, Pacquiao believes that the Bible allows death penalty under circumstances allowed by the government. He has already filed three separate bills pushing death penalty for crimes of drug trafficking, kidnapping, and aggravated rape.
