A joint operation of the local police and the Philippine Army led to the arrest of three members of the Maute terror group in Piagapo, Lanao del Sur on Wednesday, January 24.
According to ABS-CBN, the terrorists were identified as Jalal Ramal Berongan, alias “Mayor”; Opao Macod Dimacaling; and Ibrahim Alek Undi, alias “Brad Alexander,” who were reportedly responsible for the killing of 3 businessmen last month.
The three admitted to being members of the ISIS-inspired terrorist group.
Chief Superintendent Graciano Mijares of the Police Regional Office-Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao said the terrorists were arrested by the combined forces of Lanao del Sur Police and the Philippine Army’s 103rd Brigade with assistance from local officials.
“We’d like to confirm that there are still some members who are still on the run. There are a few of them left but the government forces are on top of the situation. Although we can’t say there is nothing to worry about . . . but we have to help each other especially at the outskirts of Lanao del Sur where they move from time to time,” Mijares said.
Recovered from the suspects were rocket-propelled grenades, materials for improvised explosive devices and a grenade launcher.
