  • Kabataan party-list retaliates at President Duterte; saying that he should expect more walkouts
  • President Duterte called out UP student activists who walked out of their classes in protest and said he will give their slots to ‘bright lumads’
  • Student activists are planning a National Day of Walkout on February 23

The student activists under the Kabataan Party-list made their response to President Duterte clear, “Youth to Duterte: Expect more walkouts against high costs of tuition, other fees.” The youth activist leader Rep. Sarah Elago called the Duterte administration as a “fanatical dictatorship.”

A statement released on the Facebook page stated, “His statement exposes the true nature of his ‘free education’ scam: not all will benefit; instead of guaranteeing the right of every child to education, he dangles it around every time there is opposition to his fanatical dictatorship.”

“As if education is free in UP and other state universities; many students continue to suffer from skyrocketing costs of tuition and other school fees, causing growing discontent and rage among the youth,” it continued.

They also warned the President that they will participate in a National Day of Walkout on February 23, “Expect even more students to walk out of their classes to fight Duterte’s dictatorship and tyrannical attacks on the youth and the people.”

This came after President Rodrigo Duterte threatened to replace the University of the Philippines (UP) student activists with those ‘bright lumads’ from Mindanao. Several UP students walked out from their classes as a form of protest and participation in the National Day of Walkout Against Tyranny and Dictatorship.
