An undercover police officer posing as drug buyer was shot dead by one of three suspects during a drug buy-bust operation in Minglanilla, Cebu on Monday afternoon, February 19.
Police officer 2 (PO2) Evie Espina was the second Philippine National Police anti-narcotics cop who was killed during an anti-illegal drugs operation this month. The first being Senior Insp. Jimmy Senosin, the deputy chief of the Taytay Municipal Police Station, who was gunned down last February 11.
Senior Police Officer 2 Oliver Dacua of the Minglanilla Police Station, in a phone interview by Journal Online, said PO2 Espina was trying to buy methamphetamine hydrochloride (shabu) from three drug suspects led by Jovelio Franza, the number 1 drug personality in Cebu, when the suspects sensed that they were dealing with a cop.
Franza pulled out a concealed gun and shot PO2 Espina several times before fleeing. Other cops posted in the area chased the trio. Two of the suspects managed to escape, but Franza was cornered and eventually killed by the pursuing cops.
A 9mm loaded semi-automatic pistol, several heat-sealed plastic sachets containing suspected shabu were recovered from the slain Franza. A motorcycle owned by the suspects was also seized. A grenade was found inside the motorcycle’s compartment.
