The K-12 Program was launched in the country by the Department of Education in 2016. A total of approximately 1,252,357 Grade 12 Senior High School (SHS) students are projected to graduate soon.
In January 2018, DepEd Undersecretary Tonisito Umali underlined that K-12 has been formed at the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) in close collaboration with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). With this, he determined that it might already be considered a comprehensive training for kids who want to work immediately after SHS if they do not plan to attend college after graduation.
Although these grads are believed to be professionally prepared, SHS students interviewed by GMA News, Thomas Nicanor, Argent Estacio, and Zarica Capua, stated that they will not look for work until after graduation. They believe that the work market is competitive. As a result, students must continue on to college. According to these graduating students, if college graduates are having difficulty finding good jobs, it will be even more challenging for SHS students who do not yet have a degree.
Students in the additional two years receive specialized instruction in fields such as information technology, accounting, business and management, technical vocational livelihood, humanities and social sciences, and others.
Education Secretary Leonor Briones, on the other hand, feels that many SHS graduates would be able to find work right away. She went on to say that there is a good chance that the organizations where these initial K-12 graduates had on-the-job training will recruit them because they were orientated about their procedures throughout their immersion. They would undoubtedly rather recruit them than train fresh employees.
According to Jose Luis Yulo Jr., president of the Chamber of Commerce of the Philippine Islands, the first batch of K to 12 graduates, particularly those who have completed the Tech-Voc track, would find various career prospects. According to Yulo, college graduates may find it more difficult to obtain work in the country since we need more technology-savvy graduate students.
However, Yulo stated that he is not preventing SHS students from pursuing tertiary education because "the higher the education, the better."
Final Words
According to a DepEd study, there are 766,000 Academic Track students. This means that 61% of these students studied Accountancy, Business Management, Humanities and Social Science, as well as Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. In contrast, 39% of SHS graduates pursued the Technical Vocational Livelihood, Arts & Design, and Sports tracks.
