A female overseas Filipino worker (OFW) who arrived in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on the last week of January this year to work as a domestic helper has been sent home by her employer because of her inability to speak and understand English.
“Hindi po ako marunong, ni isa po, pag sinasabihan ako ng how are you hindi ko rin po maisagot. Yuko na lang po ako,” the Pinay OFW told GMA News in an interview at the Philippine Overseas Labor Office.
[I don’t know how (to speak English), not even one (word). If they ask me “how are you” I can’t reply. I just bow my head]
The OFW said he only finished second grade in elementary school due to poverty. She had a live-in partner when she was 15 years old, but her partner is currently in jail over drug-related cases.
Poverty forced her to try her luck working overseas as a domestic helper.
Asked how she applied for an overseas job if she did not understand a word of the English language, she said the recruiter assisted her. All she did was sign documents.
