President Rodrigo Duterte is poised to toughen the administration’s campaign against bigtime smugglers. He warned that those who would be caught will rot in jail.
According to the Inquirer, President Duterte wants to categorize as economic sabotage the smuggling of goods worth over P50 million.
“I’m going to categorize its importation above 50 million as an act of economic sabotage. So if you are caught doing it, committing the crime or about to commit, or in fact committed the crime and you are apprehended there somewhere, you will be arrested and you will be detained to face trial,” the President said during a meeting with farmers, fisherfolks and members of coastal communities held in Malacañang on Thursday, April 5.
“And if it’s more than P50 million, no bail so you rot in prison,” he added.
During the same event in Malacañang, the President directed the incoming Philippine National Police chief Oscar Albayalde to prepare bigger jails for lawbreakers.
