Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc praised President Rodrigo Duterte’s position on the South China Sea dispute.
The two leaders met during the 32nd Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) leaders’ summit. Presidential spokesman Harry Roque shared that it was Nguyen who opened the topic on the sea dispute to Duterte. Vietnam has been firm with their opposition against China’s expansion in the South China Sea.
The Vietnam leader praised Duterte for “the totality of the West Philippine Sea settled under the rule of law and the binding norms of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, “ as quoted by Inquirer.
Roque also quoted Nguyen on Duterte’s position with China, “We [Vietnam] will learn from his [President Duterte’s] handling of China. The President handled China very well.”
Roque explained that the Vietnam leader is seeking support from Duterte as Vietnam files for a joint submission with Malaysia for an extended continental shelf in the South China Sea.
