MANILA, Philippines – Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III is eyeing to replace Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales who is set to complete her 7-year term in July.
Bello, a former Justice Secretary and a solicitor general during the term of former President Fidel V. Ramos, has reportedly submitted his application and other documentary requirements for the Ombudsman position to the Judicial Bar Council (JBC).
JBC is responsible for screening candidates for the judiciary positions, including the Ombudsman which will be vacated once Morales steps down this coming July 26.
Bello, also a former lawmaker and who was once Duterte’s Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process, is expected to complete his requirements on Tuesday; the last day of submission of application.
Aside from Bello, other contenders for the powerful position include lawyer Edna Batacan, a former lawyer for Duterte and ex-First Gentleman Mike Arroyo; former Sandiganbayan presiding justice Edilberto Sandoval; and Duterte’s classmate in San Beda College Rex Rico.
Other names floated earlier to replace Morales are Associate Justice Teresita De Castro, as well as Associate Justices Samuel Martires and Presbitero Velasco Jr.
Also rumored as being considered for the position is Solicitor General Jose Calida who is said be ‘not very interested’ in the post.
