- Duterte said Xi Jinping has assured to protect him from ouster
- The Chinese leader supposedly said China would not allow the Philippines to be destroyed
- He also criticized US for being ‘scared’ now and ‘losing the will to fight’
MANILA, Philippines – As if to emphasize the strong relationship between China and the Philippines, President Rodrigo Duterte said Xi Jinping has assured to protect him from threat of being ousted from office.
Duterte made the announcement on Tuesday in his speech at Casiguran Bay, Aurora province during the send-off of 50 Filipino scientists to the Philippine Rise.
“The assurances of [President] Xi Jinping were very encouraging. ‘We will not allow you to be taken out from your office, and we will not allow the Philippines to go to the dogs,’” said Duterte.
The Filipino leader added Xi also assured him China will not allow the Philippines to be destroyed. “We will be there when you need us,” Duterte quoted Xi as saying.
Duterte said he believes this is because he is a freely elected leader and what Xi said is a justified statement.
He also took a swipe at the United States, once the Philippines closest ally before Duterte took office, for supposedly being scared and for ‘losing the will to fight’.
“China said ‘We will be there’. I’m not sure with the Americans because the Americans have lost their will to fight. They only have weaponries, cruise missile, maybe they also have a supersonic thing but the boots on the ground, the ones who will go there to fight, America is scared,” said the President.
