Two female friends, both election candidates at Barangay Lantawan, San Fernando, Cebu were tied for the 7th kagawad (councilor) position. Their solution: coin toss.

Alicia Alcoseba and Analyn Ilustrisimo both received 515 votes as recounted by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) office.

The two are close friends and they even filed their certificates of candidacy (COC) at the same time and were always together during the campaign period.

Coin toss was the solution both parties agreed upon in front of some Comelec personnel and barangay board of canvassers (BBC.)

Alicia Alcoseba won.

“Nagpapasalamat ako sa Panginoon na itong posisyon ko ngayon at ng kaibigan ko pinag-aralan talaga namin nang ilang araw kung paano tatanggapin pero ibinigay talaga sa akin ng Panginoon dahil para sa akin kung siya ang nanalo, handa ko ring ibigay,” Alcoseba said.

[I thank God for this position which I and my friend have thought about for days, how to accept it, but the Lord gave it to me and for me, if she had won, I was ready to hand it over.]

Ilustrisimo, on the other hand, said:”Okay lang sa ‘kin na natalo ngayong eleksyon. First time kong tumakbo, siya pangatlo na niya. Okay lang, tanggap ko naman.”

[It’s OK for me to lose this election, it’s just my first time running, it’s her third. It’s OK, I accept it.]
