- The Comelec will suspend the proclamation of around 1,000 overaged SK candidates
- There are also 3,000 to 4,000 cases where candidates are not registered voters in the district where they ran
- The poll body is hoping to resolve all similar cases by June 30
MANILA, Philippines – The Commission on Election (Comelec) said on Monday they will suspend the proclamation of more than 1,000 Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) bets should they be declared winners in the recently-held barangay election.
Comelec acting Chairman Al Pareno told reporters they have already confirmed around 1000 cases of SK candidates who have either exceeded the required age of 24 or violated the anti-dynasty provision.
“We are suspending around 1,000 cases as of today. Huwag silang magulat na nagsuspend kami ng mga tao na ipo-proclaim namin na nanalo na sa SK, dahil kung over-aged, di namin papaupuin,” said Pareno.
[I hope they won’t be surprised if ever we suspend individuals who were proclaimed winners because they are overaged. We will not allow them to take their oath.]
The Comelec official added they were shocked upon learning that some 40-something are about to be sworn in; thus, the decision to suspend their proclamation.
Pareno also disclosed that the Comelec discovered there are about 3,000 to 4,000 cases where candidates in barangay and SK elections were not registered voters in the district where they ran.
In this case, where winning candidates face suspension due to violation of election rules and regulations, the Comelec explained, the procedure of succession will be observed.
“The only way we can handle that is to file a formal procedure for cancellation of their certificates of candidacy or disqualification,” said Commissioner Luie Guia.
The poll body is hoping to resolve all such cases by June 30 so the procedure of succession could be properly implemented.
