Duterte declares 49,684 hectares of Philippine Rise as “strict protection zone”

On May 15, President Duterte signed Proclamation No. 489 mentioning the directive that the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ (DENR) administrative jurisdiction and control over 352,390 hectares of the Philippine Rise.

49,684 hectares of which were declared as a strict protection zone for the Filipinos scientists who will conduct six months of research in the underwater plateau. The remaining areas are designated as a special fisheries management area.

The directive was declared when Duterte sent off 50 Filipino scientists from the Casiguran Bay in Aurora province.

According to Inquirer, the proclamation includes a directive to DENR to conduct an assessment of the area and to develop a management plan, as well as a research framework.

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Department of Agriculture, and Department of Energy will be part of the task.

The disturbance and destruction of Philippine Rise is punishable under the law.

It can be recalled that on May 15, President Duterte was not able to visit Philippine Rise as planned; instead, the President just led a send-off from the ship BRP Davao Del Sur for 50 local scientists.
