President Rodrigo Duterte may be a man of strong words but he admitted that he too can be overwhelmed with emotions and weep.
The President revealed that he shed a few tears after being overwhelmed with emotions during the ceremonial opening of the oil field in Alegria, Cebu. It is considered to be the first onshore oil discovery in the country.
Duterte admitted that he tried to hide his tears when he turned on the valve. He was quoted by Manila Bulletin saying, “Last week I was in Alegria, Cebu. For the first time nakita ko ‘yung apoy when I turned on the valve para lumabas ‘yun and pag-uwi ko sa chopper kunyari nag-wipe ako ng face ko but I cried. At least for the first time nakita ko oil.”

He continued, “It’s not because we are lazy that the Japanese are better off than us. They do not have the monopoly of industry. The problem is that we don’t have oil.”
The newly-discovered Alegria Oil Field is operated by China International Mining Petroleum Co. Ltd. (CIMP). During the opening of the oil and gas production company, the President was ecstatic that will greatly improve the economy of Alegria. He was quoted by Inquirer saying, “Alegria is now rich!”
