Duterte witnesses destruction of P34.7M worth of smuggled luxury vehicles

On Wednesday, May 30, President Rodrigo Duterte witnessed the destruction of smuggled motorcycles and cars valued at P34.71 million.

It was the third batch of contraband vehicles to be destroyed so far in 2018.

116 motorcycles were destroyed at the Bureau of Customs (BOC) in Manila which includes a Harley Davidson, brand new Vespa scooters, a used BMW and two Triumphs.

Other vehicles destroyed aside from the motorcycles include a Mitsubishi Pajero, two Land Rovers, and a Volvo, as well as two units of used 2002 and 2005 Ford Ecoline E350 at the Port of Cebu.

BOC said the vehicles were smuggled through the ports of Manila, Subic, Cebu, and Iloilo.

On February 6, 2018, Duterte previously witnessed a similar public condemnation of smuggled vehicles at the Port of Manila during the BOC anniversary.

On March 14, 2018, the President also oversaw the destruction of smuggled luxury vehicles worth P27.2 million at Port Irene in Cagayan.

Duterte is against auctioning off of contraband items because according to him, this would only give the smugglers an opportunity to secure them legally through the BOC.
