- A groom in Dubai divorced his wife 15 minutes into their marriage
- Apparently, the husband had a misunderstanding with his father-in-law over dowry
- The man felt ‘insulted and demeaned’ by the father’s demand to pay up immediately
Some marriages last forever; some don’t.
Well, one Dubai couple’s marriage lasted less than 15 minutes; perhaps a record for the books.
As per Gulf News story, a newly-married man in Dubai divorced his wife less than 15 minutes after signing their marriage contract due to a misunderstanding with his father-in-law.
Apparently, the misunderstanding stemmed from the father’s immediate demand to hand him over the balance of the dowry in time, as per their agreement.
The groom agreed to pay the bride’s father 100,000 Dirhams ($27,224) for the marriage, and this was even stipulated in their contract.
As per their agreement, the husband-to-be will have to pay 50,000 Dirhams ($13,612) upon the signing of the marriage contract inside the Sharia office. The remaining half will be paid upon leaving the court building.
The groom made the initial payment as agreed. But once the couple stepped out of the court, the father immediately demanded the remaining amount. However, the groom said to wait for just 5 minutes and assured the father the money is in the car.
But the father supposedly insisted that his son-in-law pay up immediately and told the latter to send a friend or a relative to get the money from his vehicle.
The groom reportedly felt ‘insulted and demeaned’ by the father’s behavior; prompting him to call the marriage off and demand for a divorce.
“The groom felt insulted and demeaned by his father-in-law. He told the bride’s father that he did not want his daughter as his wife and divorced her in less than 15 minutes from signing the marriage contract,” a lawyer handling the case told Gulf News.
