  • Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have ditched the traditional wedding gift registry
  • Instead they suggest that people donate to a charity
  • One of the chosen charities, and the only foreign organization, is the Mumbai-based Myna Mahila Foundation

In a departure from tradition, the newly wed couple Prince Harry and Meghan asked their friends, guests and fans to donate to charity instead of sending them wedding gifts.

One of them is the Mumbai-based Myna Mahila Foundation as the only foreign organization to be chosen by the royal couple.

The Myna Mahila Foundation aims to improve access to sanitary protection for women living in Mumbai’s slums; providing them with pads that are both affordable and hygienic.

“We employ women from urban slums in Mumbai to manufacture and sell affordable sanitary pads back into their communities, improving menstrual hygiene, providing stable employment, and building a trusted network,” says their website.

Women from India are often not allowed to enter places of worship or touch food while on their periods.

Meghan Markle saw the work done by the foundation when she visited them last year.

Not only have the royal couple, now officially the Duke and Duchess or Sussex, chosen the Myna Mahila Foundation to benefit from donations, four women activists from the charity were also invited to the royal wedding that took place in Windsor Castle, UK.
