A recent study in UK suggests that a certain type of diet may influence the timing of menopause.
According to an Asia One story, the research was conducted in more than 14,000 women whose diets included fish and legumes had the end of their menstrual cycle in later years than those women who didn’t eat much of these protein-rich food.
The study, which was also published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, concluded that having a high-carbohydrate diet like eating pasta and rice also leads to earlier menopausal period.
Based from the research, early menopause leads to an increase risk of cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis, and depression.
Yashvee Dunneram, the lead author of the study, said that natural menopause timing is preferred because it protects women from breast, endometrial and ovarian c****r. Thus, investigating whether different types of diet modify the timing of menopause is crucial.
The average age of women who naturally no longer menstruate is around 50.5 years old.
The study also concluded that an additional average daily portion of legumes delays menopause for nearly a year while a consumption of additional portion of oily fish was correlated to a three-year delay.
However, other scientists have suggested that it is necessary to replicate this study in other parts of the world in order to determine if it would yield a similar report.
