Get to know Ion Perez, the Mr. Universe Tourism 2018.
Perez beat all 20 finalists from different parts of the world to bring home the coveted title. The Philippines was this year’s pageant host and it was held at the Tanghalang Pasigueno.
Perez, who hails from Concepcion, Tarlac shared his humble beginnings; of how he would help his mother pack and sell their homemade ‘kalamay.’
He told Push, “Tinutulungan ko po si nanay na gumawa ng kakanin, kasi po nagtitinda po siya. Ako po ‘yung nagpa-pack sa mga kalamay na tinitinda niya.” [I would help my mother make ‘kakanin’ and she would sell it. I would pack the ‘kalamay’ that she would sell.”
He also admitted that he used to be very shy and it took three years before he was finally convinced to join the pageant. Perez said, “Sobrang mahiyain po talaga ako, siguro dala din ng isa akong probinsyano.” [I was very shy maybe because I live in the province.]
Perez admitted that he is still in disbelief that he won the competition but is very much happy. He said, “Sobrang saya ko po, na ang isang bata na dati nilang sinasabihan na pangit, mabaho, maitim, eto na po ako ngayon.” [I am very happy that a young boy who was once called ugly, smelly, dark, achieved this now.]
