President Rodrigo Duterte called himself useless after the Social Weather Stations (SWS), a public polling body in the country, made public the result of its recent survey on crime victimization.

According to MSN, in a speech before newly elected barangay captains in Zamboanga Del Sur, President Duterte cited the SWS survey result to illustrate his point that the country is crime-ridden. The survey result showed that 1.5 families reported falling victims to crimes.

“Pag ganito, wala akong silbi. I’ll ask you to join me, mag-resign na lang tayo,” the President told his audience.

[If it is like this, I am useless. I’ll ask you to join me, let us just resign]

The latest survey, conducted last March 23 to 27, actually showed a drop in the number of families that reported falling victim to common crimes such as pickpocket, break-ins, carjacking and physical violence. In December last year, 1.7 million families said they were crime victims.

In fact, the President’s spokesman, Harry Roque, welcomed the latest SWS survey result because fewer families reported falling victim to crimes.

However, President Duterte chose to focus on the fact that 1.5 million families have fallen victim to crimes. He said more needs to be done to address the problem of criminality in the country.

“There seems to be a semblance of a republic and a nation but inside it is topsy-turvy. It’s crime-ridden. Their conclusion is, people are usually afraid to go out at night or to walk the streets because of the crime. So how do we deal with this problem?” Pres. Duterte said.

He urged the newly elected barangay officials to focus on the campaign against criminality. He ordered Department of Local and Interior Government Secretary Eduardo Año to perform an audit on the performance of all local government units, as well as to determine the areas that have high crime rates and with persisting drug problem.

The President warned that he will file charges against incompetent local officials.
