Who’ll be the next Ombudsman? Duterte says he’s reviewing shortlist now

MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte revealed he has started going over the shortlist of potential candidates who will replace outgoing Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales who is due to retire next month.

There are ten names included inn shortlist submitted by the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) to Malacañang.

These include Sandiganbayan Associate Justice Efren Dela Cruz, Supreme Court Associate Justice Samuel Martires, Special Prosecutor Edilberto Sandoval and Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III.

Also in the list are Judge Carlos Espero II, Atty. Rainier Madrid, Atty. Felito Ramirez, Atty. Rex Rico, Atty.  Edna Batacan and Atty. Rey Nathaniel Ifurung.

Madrid is the lawyer of Paolo Duterte; Ramirez is a fratmate of the President; while Rico is Duterte’s former schoolmate at San Beda.

On the other hand, Batacan is also a former legal counsel of the President and is the only female applicant for the position.

“I have a short list. Men of [integrity] ano talaga, unshakable. [But] I have to — in addition to that, I have to talk to a lot of people,” Duterte said in a speech in Iloilo City on Wednesday.

“May [There are] judges and lawyers and the entire gamut of the crowd sa gobyerno [in government],” the President added.

The JBC has also started reviewing the aspirants this week. Nine of the candidates face the panel on Wednesday except for Espero.

Morales will step down on July 26 after completing her 7-year term. Duterte earlier said he does not want another woman to take her place.
