The Department of Transportation (DOTr) rolled out nearly 200 modern jeepneys under the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program of the government during an event held at the Rizal Park on Friday, July 20.

The jeepneys are the first batch of the modernized public utility jeepneys that will be distributed to transport operators and cooperatives that already have franchises validated by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).

During the event called “Dispatch of Modern Public Transport Vehicles: Pasada Tungo sa Maunlad na Bansa,” the nearly 200 modernized jeepneys with “Dyip Ko, Dyip Natin” tag were parked in front of the Quirino Grandstand for public viewing.

In a video posted on DOTr’s Facebook page, government officials seen during the event were PCOO Assistant Secretary for Social Media Mocha Uson, DOTr Undersecretary for Road Transport Tim Orbos, Assistant Secretary Mark de Leon, and LTFRB Chairman Martin Delgra III.

Under the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program of the government, jeepneys that are 15 years old or older will no longer be allowed to be registered, therefore will no longer be permitted on the road.

“Napapanahon nang magkaroon ang publiko ng hindi lang ligtas kundi komportable at kaaya-ayang pampublikong transportasyon. Kung kayoý papipiliin, saan niyo ba mas gustong sumakay: sa karag-karag na jeepney na itim na usok ang ibinubuga, o sa mas modernong jeep kung saan makauupo kayo ng komportable at batid ninyong ihahatid kayo sa inyong paroroonan nang ligtas at hindi nakadaragdag sa polusyon?  DOTr Secretary Arthur Tugade said in a statement.

[It is high time that the public should have not only safe but comfortable and pleasant public transport. If you were to choose, where do you want to ride: to the old and dilapidated jeepneys that belch black smoke or to the  modern jeepneys wherein you will be able to sit comfortably and you are assured that you will reach your destinations safely and not contribute to pollution.)
