MANILA, Philippines – The brother of Sharon Cuneta will be running for mayor of Pasay City; the city once ruled by his father for more than four decades.
In a Facebook post on Monday, the Megastar said she accompanied her brother, Cesar ‘Chet’ Cuneta, to the Comelec office for registration in preparation for seeking the city’s mayoralty post in the 2019 election.
“Only with the spirit to serve honestly and with our father Pablo’s legacy in mind. Cesar “Chet” Cuneta is running for Mayor of Pasay City. I pray that if you are living in Pasay and reading this, I pray that God touch your heart and support him in these coming elections,” Sharon wrote in her post.
She also appealed to all the residents and registered voters of Pasay City to support her brother’s candidacy with the promise that “all of Pasay’s earnings shall go to the city of Pasay and its people”, and not into their pockets.
“It took us many, many heart-to-heart talks throughout some time to finally come to this decision. And we made sure that when we came to it, it was with all our hearts and souls,” she added.
The actress father, the late Mayor Pablo Cuneta, is the longest-serving mayor in Philippine history; having served as the Pasay City chief executive for 41 years under 7 presidents.
After a brief hiatus from politics following the 1986 EDSA Revolution, the Cuneta patriarch regained the city’s mayoralty post in the 1988 local election and went on to serve for 10 years until his demise in 1998.
In the same Facebook post, the veteran singer-actress said she gave Chet a diamond ring which she had been wearing and which she earlier gave to her father as a gift.
“I was too emotional, I couldn’t stop crying. May God be in charge of this, my brother and our family’s new journey!” said the Megastar.
