The basketball match between Gilas Pilipinas and Australian Boomers was halted after full-blown fisticuffs erupted during the third quarter of their game on Monday, July 2 at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan.

Things got physical between RR Pogoy of Gilas Pilipinas and Australia’s Chris Goulding who was hit by Pogoy’s elbow while the latter was driving to the basket. Then Goulding’s teammate, Daniel Kickert, shoved Pogoy with an elbow, prompting other Gilas Pilipinas players to retaliate. All hell broke loose after that.

The usually mild-mannered Jayson Castro also joined the melee and threw a punch to Daniel Kickert’s face.

According to the Manila Times, the benches of both teams were cleared as the players either joined the rumble or acted as the proverbial cooler heads.

As a result of the rumble, nine Gilas Pilipinas players and three in the Australian side were ejected from the game.

The game later resumed with only three Gilas Pilipinas players playing against five Australians.

Eventually, Gilas Pilipinas lost to Australia.
