- Jake Zyrus just invaded the spotlight again with a new album “Evolution”
- Star Music executive producer Jonathan Manalo, when asked at a presscon on who is the better singer, said that both are great but Jake Zyrus has better wisdom
- Jake also shared how he sings, the techniques he uses and song choices with his “new” low tone voice
A more confident, male looking and sounding Jake Zyrus appeared before the press last September 4 during a 7 track-album release “Evolution”.
In an interview, when asked on how he would describe Jake’s singing now, his voice and style, his music producer Jonathan Manalo described it as follows:
“Hindi natin maaalis na mare-recall yung boses ni Charice kasi talagang sobrang magkaibang boses yong Charice and Jake Zyrus. Talagang si Jake Zyrus is a male artist. Kung meron akong makikitang difference, yung skill level. Pareho silang magaling na singer, parehong soulful, magkaiba lang yung expression. Kasi si Charice, magaling and soulful in a female expression. And si Jake, magaling din and soulful in a male expression. So both singers are magaling,” Manalo said.
“Makikita natin yung level ng talent sa level ng talent na nakita natin nung si Charice pa siya. Ang advantage lang ni Jake Zyrus, meron siyang experience na pinaghuhugutan. ‘Yun ‘yong wala si Charice, dahil si Charice, bata. Si Jake Zyrus, mas may wisdom kaya mararamdaman mo. Mas may p
ain na pinagdaanan,” according to Jonathan.
Jake, who rose to fame with his excellent vocal power belting high notes during his Charice days was also questioned if he misses his old voice.
“Hindi po,” he said. “But when I do concert now or when I perform live, ‘yung technique that I used to do when I was singing those high notes, it’s the same thing, except I sing different songs now, but the same feeling.”
For him, he doesn’t see any difference between male and female singers who sl
ay high notes. They all sound the same, he said. And yes, he admires Morissette [Amon], Zephanie [Dimaranan], Jona, when he listens to them but he doesn’t get that same feeling anymore.
Considering himself a transman now, he looks up to Eric Santos and Jed Madela for their singing prowess.
Sharing about the title of his new album, he said, “The ‘Evolution’ title is not just about my transition, but the evolution of my li
fe. It’s kind of like the theme song of every chapter of my li fe. Everything connects with my li fe, with my voice, hence, evolution.”
Indeed, he had been through a lot of transformation. Just last June 26, 2019 he posted a photo on instagram where he proudly showed his facial hair.
How do you feel about Jake’s reinvention of himself?
