Long before getting the “Megastar” title in the mid-1980s, there was an adorable three-year-old Sharon Cuneta relishing her first television appearance.
In an episode of Jeepney TV’s “Showbiz Pa More”, Sharon burst into laughter when an image of her first television (TV) appearance was flashed on the screen. It was an unexpected experience, she said. Her aunt, then-superstar actress Helen Gamboa, brought her to the show “Oras Ng Ligaya” in 1969 and just thought of giving her a special number.
“Ito ang ebidensya na talagang una akong lumabas sa TV. Umekstra lang ako, kasama ako ng Mama Helen Gamboa ko….Ni-lip sync ko song ng Mama Helen ko. I was three years old,” she shared. [This is the proof that my first showbiz appearance was in television. I was just an extra during that time, I was with Mama Helen Gamboa. In that photo, I was lip-syncing the song of my Mama Helen. I was three years old.]
Less than a decade after such television appearance, Sharon became the “Jukebox Princess“; appearing on the Philippine pop charts for the first time in 1978 with her hit song “Mr. DJ”, as well as popularizing the songs “Kahit Maputi Na Ang Buhok Ko” and “High School Life”. She also sang the theme song of Cebu Film Festival entry “Tubig at Langis” in 1980. However, her first song actually was “Tawag ng Pag-ibig“.
In 1981, she rose to fame as an actress through the film “Dear Heart” where she was paired with then Close-Up model and Regal Films’ 1980s heartthrob, Gabby Concepcion. And the rest was history.
