- Actress He
art Evangelista is a certified dog lover and animal welfare advocate
- She hopes to change the mindset of people when it comes to aspins as they are smart and as beautiful as any other breeds
- She also narrated the story of Panda, her rescued aspin whom she thinks is a very disciplined dog even without proper training
art Evangelista grew with a lot of dogs around her. In fact, when she was young, her family loved dogs so much that they have more than 20 dogs li ving with them. These dogs belonged to different breeds but she didn’t know the difference yet between purebred and aspin (asong Pinoy).
It was during their stay at their farm in Cavite that gave her a clear picture of the situation of aspins in their hometown.
“We had a place in Carmona, Cavite, and then madaming mga aso na kin
akat ay sa labas. Since we had Aspins, sobrang shock for us na makarinig ng asong kinakat ay. That’s when namulat ‘yung mga mata namin. And then as I got older, my dad would also tell me na ito ‘yung nangyayari,” she said in her interview in an informative show hosted by Dingdong Dantes “Amazing Earth”.
Since then she has been an active celebrity ambassador of PAWS (Philippine Animal Welfare Society) which campaigns to change the impression of people when it comes to aspins.
“Because ‘pag sinabi mong askal, parang madumi, may r
abi es or nang angag at,”
“We had to change the mentality. By giving her a good life and showing people na she deserves a really nice collar too, or she deserves a nice blanket, then it changes the way people think. And then ‘pag nakita nila ‘yung aso, ‘Ang ganda ng aso parang ‘di askal, ” she shared,
As an animal advocate, she encourages adopting aspins cause it’s free rather than shopping for expensive dogs because a lot of them are waiting for their forever homes in the shelters. When properly taken cared of, these dogs would also be as beautiful like any other.
art cited her aspin Panda as an example. She was rescued by her father from Nasugbu, Batangas after coming to their property. The dog’s father was injur ed while her mother also had many puppies. The actress would describe Panda as a very smart dog who doesn’t pee and poop inside the house and is prim and proper wherever she goes.
“Feeling ko ang aspin, parang meron silang utang na loob. They are born to be street smart. Well, all dogs are loyal but I think mas grateful ‘yung Aspin for me,” she added.
Indeed, Panda is one lucky aspin. We hope that with He
art’s continuing campaign through PAWS, pet owners will treat our Philippine breed as special as any other dog.
