Sen. Manny Pacquiao plans to run for presidency in 2022.
In a live stream with World Boxing Council (WBC) President Mauricio Sulaiman, promoter Bob Arum revealed that he was able to talk to the boxing icon, who revealed his political plans to him.
“I did a Zoom telephone call with him, [he said] ‘Bob, I’m gonna run in 2022 and when I win, I want you there at my inauguration.'”
During Pacquiao’s 39th birthday celebration in 2017, Pres. Rodrigo Duterte said he wants the senator to become president.
“You have brought so much pride and joy for being a world boxer, worthy of emulation by our countrymen. As a senator, you are a true leader. ‘Yong style mo na ‘yan, gusto kitang gawing presidente,” he said.
The president first mentioned the presidency to Pacquiao during his courtesy call to the palace after his victory over Jessie Vargas in November 2016, according to ABS-CBN News. He raised Pacquiao’s hand and said, “For president na ‘to ha.”
In a previous interview, Arum already said the boxer’s plan was to run for a senate seat before running for president. “He is going to be a president. He is going to run for the Senate of the Philippines in 2016 and then 2022 or maybe later, he will run for president.”
Pacquiao first set foot on politics in 2017 when he ran as South Cotabato First District representative but lost. He then transferred to Sarangani where he became representative in 2010.
