The Department of Education (DepEd) has cancelled its invitation to bid for the supply and delivery of ham and cheese for its central office’s Christmas celebration after earning the ire of netizens for allocating P4.2 million for this amid the recent typhoons that affected many Filipinos.
“The call for bidding has been cancelled. It was a regular procurement but it was inappropriate at this time when our employees are severely affected by recent disasters,” DepEd admitted in a statement.
Netizens took screenshots of the now deleted document posted on November 12 which called for bidding for P2.982 million worth of ham (4,260 pieces) and P1.296 million for 2,160 pieces of cheese, totalling P4.278 million.
DepEd added that they have reallocated the funds for the COVID-19 efforts for their employees and for those who were affected by T
yphoons Rolly and Ulysses, which affected many parts of the country.
“Other regional and division offices not affected by the
typhoons have also pitched in to help our teachers and learners on the ground,” they also said.
Netizens, meanwhile, were grateful that the bidding was called out by the public.
“Stand up, speak out! Magmatyag, magsiwalat! Ang sama-sama nating mga tinig ay tagumpay ng sambayanan lalo na ng mga kawawang bik
tima ng sakun a. Sana po ay mapunta sa mga tunay na bi ktima,” public school teacher Joselyn Fegalan, who was one of the netizens who posted about the bidding, said in a Facebook post.
“Maraming mas importanteng bagay na puwedeng paglaanan na makatutulong sa mga mag-aaral at guro nang pangmatagalan,” netizen V. Delos Santos said.
