Hundreds of residents in Navotas City scrambled to leave their homes after an ammonia leak from an ice plant on Wednesday afternoon.
The incident happened in Barangay North Bay Boulevard (NBBS) South past 4:00 pm. The leak reportedly came from T.P. Marcelo Ice Plant and Cold Storage which is owned by Mayor Toby Tiangco’s mother.
Tiangco took to Twitter to warn motorists to avoid North Boulevard and R-10 while the leak is being contained by the authorities.
He also urged the affected residents in the area to evacuate as soon as possible upon being told of the incident around 4:15 pm.
“Please avoid North Blvd and R-10, may ammonia leak from T.P. Marcelo Ice Plant and Cold Storage. Nanduon na po BFP and mga ambulance natin. Sa mga residente pls evacuate,” the mayor tweeted.
He has since apologized and ordered closure of the plant and vowed to investigate the incident.
“Dahil kumpanya ‘yan ng mother ko, ako na po ang humihingi ng paumanhin sa nangyari. But we will make sure, kahit kumpanya po ‘yan ng kamag-anak ko, sisiguraduhin po natin na kung ano ‘yung dapat… dapat mas una sila,” Tiangco told DZMM Teleradyo.
Ammonia is a chemical used as refrigerant for manufacturing purified tube ice.
When exposed, a person may suffer irritation and severe respiratory injuries. Prolonged exposure at high concentration could be fa
tal for humans and animals.
Meanwhile, those evacuated from the area are being housed at an evacuation center and barred from returning to their homes until the air is safe.
