In Spain, a woman might get in jail for lying about being blind for 28 years, deceiving not just her neighbors, relatives, and husband, but also several private organizations from whom she got benefits.
Carmen Jimenez, a native of Recoletos near Madrid, has lately confessed to lying for 28 years about being blind.
She gave a very straightforward explanation that most people could certainly relate to: she is anti-social and despises greeting others, especially those she doesn't even know.
Carmen, who is currently 57 years old, defended herself by saying:
I was tired of seeing people and stop to say hello, I’ve never been very social and pretending to be blind I avoided many social commitments.- Carmen Jimenez
Carmen pretended to have an eye injury almost three decades ago, which later allegedly caused her to become completely blind.
The incident, according to her family, especially her husband, was a major blow to everyone, but they still supported her.
Because his wife could wear appropriate makeup the majority of the time despite being blind, the husband began to worry that something was wrong with her blindness. She would frequently be seen watching TV out of the corner of their eyes.
She recently revealed, to the surprise of her family, that she had always had flawless vision.
Though she might be facing a major legal struggle for obtaining financial and personal support from private groups, which means she had cheated them, her family's response to her admission ought to be the least of her concerns.
On Spanish social media, Carmen Jimenez's story quickly gained popularity, but many questioned its truth, saying it was impossible to fake blindness for so long without being discovered.
