Rescuers search Philippine volcanoafter spotting wreckage of missing Cessna plane. Philippines recuers are conducting a search mission on a volcano after spotting the wreckage of a missing Cessna plane on its slopes. The Cessna aircraft, which was carrying four passengers, including the pilot, disappeared from radar on Sunday while on a routine flight from Manila to Legazpi City in the Bicol region.
According to local authorities, the search and rescue teams were alerted by a hiker who spotted the wreckage of the plane near the summit of the Mayon Volcano, an active stratovolcano located in the Bicol region.
The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) confirmed that the missing plane was the one that was spotted on the volcano.
“„Through visual inspection, we can confirm that it is the missing Cessna plane that we have been searching for. The aircraft is badly damaged, and we are still working to determine the cause of the crash,- Mark Laurence Gatchalian
said Capt. Mark Laurence Gatchalian, a CAAP spokesperson.
The area where the wreckage was found is currently under Alert Level 2, which means that the volcano is showing "increased unrest" and that a hazardous eruption is possible within weeks or even days.

Mayon Volcano is an active stratovolcano located in the province of Albay in the Bicol Region of the Philippines. It is known for its near-perfect symmetrical cone shape and is considered one of the most active volcanoes in the country. Mayon Volcano is also a popular tourist destination and is listed as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
The volcano has erupted over 50 times in the past 500 years, with the most destructive eruption occurring in 1814, which killed more than 1,200 people. Its most recent eruption was in 2018, which lasted for several months and forced tens of thousands of people to evacuate their homes.
Mayon Volcano is monitored by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), which regularly issues updates and warnings about the volcano's activity. The area around the volcano is divided into zones based on the level of risk, with the most dangerous area being the Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ), which is a 6-kilometer radius around the volcano.
Phivolcs advises the public to avoid the PDZ due to the possibility of sudden explosions, rockfall, or pyroclastic flows. The agency also reminds people to be vigilant and prepared in case of any volcanic activity, as even a small eruption can cause significant damage and danger to those living in the surrounding areas.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation, and authorities have not released the identities of the passengers on board.
